I oppose the government bailout of the US auto industry.
The industry is in trouble because of weak management and crippling, economically impossible union contracts. At this point the US companies are beyond saving, since the unions won’t accept less.
The American taxpayer, who does not have all the benefits of the UAW members, will not pay for this folly, especially since it’s nothing more than a bandaid on a massive, fatal, bleeding wound. This is the result of the repeated failure of the collective bargaining process over many years, and any money that taxpayers would provide will not fix the underlying problem.
The fact is the auto industry in the US is in good health. The companies reflecting this health are just not named GM, Ford, and Chrysler, and they are not based in Detroit.
Americans will not suffer from the demise of the Big Three. The companies will re-emerge from bankruptcy smaller, and with an economic structure that recognizes the practical realities that the current participants refuse to acknowledge today.
The noise from Washington today regarding the bailout of Detroit has a very simple explanation – it’s a political payoff by the Democratic Party to the UAW.
That’s it. That’s all there is. It has nothing to do with what’s right for America. As a taxpayer, I’m not paying for some backroom deal between politicians and union boss thugs.
